Re-Re-Borrowed

Many of you may have read this already, but I can’t resist posting it here. I “borrowed” it from LadyDusk, who got it from Ian’s Messy Desk. I’ve never seen this before, but it is on almost 500 sites on the-internet-according-to-Goooogle.

Here’s the final word on nutrition and health. It’s a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies.

1a) The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
1b) The French eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.

2a) The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
2b) The Italians drink a lot of red wine and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.

3a) The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.

CONCLUSION:
Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Nerd Test

Followed a link from My Brain Hurts and took the nerd test. My score was 419 (89.72%). How did I end up with such a high score?

Summer in Tokyo is one of the things I was looking forward to avoiding this year. But we’re getting it full blast. Today it heated up to 36 degrees. (For you poor Centigradinally-challenged Americans out there, that’s almost 97 degrees). And to think that this is only the beginning.

5 x 3 = 15

I like my name. I always have. It’s so balanced. 5 letters each. Like I have 5 fingers on each hand. 5 people in my family. 5 points of the covenant. If I get married, I hope Mr. Adeodatus has a last name 5 letters long. (Even though I don’t believe in last names.)

When I write my name in Japanese, my first, middle, and last names are 3 letters each; in Chinese, 1 letter each. 3 and 1. More good numbers.

Emeth’s Blob

A dear, dear friend of mine who speaks English as a second language has mistakenly called my blog a “blob” twice in the past couple weeks. She’s begged me not to put her name up, so I won’t. But I will say that she is the best girl friend I have … so you’ll find out who she is eventually. I think her mistake is pretty funny. Maybe I should call this a blob. Whaddya think? I haven’t seen any blogs called blobs yet. Might prove to be pretty original.

Japanese Public School Teachers

Listen to this! One of my students is a teacher at a public high school here and she told me something today I cannot convince myself is true. Summer vacation in this country starts on July 20 and goes on to the end of August. During that time, of course, no children go to school. But teachers have to show up at the school for the entire summer. They get exactly 20 paid days off in the entire year (besides Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays). The rest of the year, they have to show up for “work” at 8:25 am and stay until 5:10 pm … even when there is nobody to teach!!!!! I asked her what they do during the spring, summer, and winter vacations. She says the teachers sit around in the teachers’ room all day, reading, chatting, sleeping, whatever. They have a 50-minute lunch break, during which time they are allowed to leave the school. They’re bureaucrats. They have to show up for “work” all year ’round. And so we have to pay them for sitting around and wasting their time. I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS! It’s utterly crazy.

You Have To See This

Thank you, Jonathan Logan, for this. It’s hilarious. I’ve downloaded it and saved it to my computer for future enjoyment. It’s a keeper. (You’ll need Shockwave Flash.) Hurrah for Li Lian Jie!
